Dezeen Competitions: Buildner’s Hospice – Home for the Terminally Ill competition seeks architectural ideas that improve the wellbeing of terminally ill patients.

Competition overview
The fourth edition of the Hospice – Home for the Terminally Ill Competition is dedicated to creating safe spaces for those grappling with terminal illnesses.
Participants are tasked with conceiving a facility that not only provides medical support but also caters to the psychological and emotional wellbeing of its visitors.
This competition seeks to challenge and redefine the role of architectural design in providing comfort and support to those in the most vulnerable stages of life.
This competition aims to open a dialogue about the potential of architecture to not just create spaces but to also cultivate environments that positively influence the mental and emotional wellbeing of its occupants.
Eligibility and judging criteria
This competition is open to any participant aged 18 and over.
The competition invites architects and designers to submit their visionary concepts for a daycare facility dedicated to terminally ill patients. Participants should envision a daycare facility where terminally ill patients can visit, offering them a refuge that transcends traditional medical care.
The design should comfortably host up to 15 visitors and five staff members, featuring essential spaces such as a common area with a library, a gathering room, a chapel, a kitchen, a dining room, a nurse’s room and a therapy room for psychological support.
Participants should choose a theoretical site within their own country and are encouraged to incorporate cultural, environmental, and social contexts into their designs.
This competition serves as an opportunity for participants to showcase how thoughtful design can support individuals facing the most challenging phases of their lives.
How to enter:
- Participants are required to upload one A2 landscape-orientated presentation board with sketches, renderings, plans, sections, elevations, diagrams and/or other presentation tools to explain their proposal
- No video files are accepted
- All information provided in writing must be in English
- All submissions must be uploaded via the architecturecompetitions.com upload panel. Access information and instructions on how to upload the presentation board will be issued to participants via email immediately after successful registration
- Presentation boards must not indicate any information related to individual’s/team’s identity
Submission deadlines
The final registration deadline is 14 March 2025. The closing date for submissions is 16 June and the winners will be announced on 22 July 2025.
