Design Anthology [Qiáo]

Atmosphere Architects has designed an exhibition space, Qiáo, for Design Anthology (DA) at Design Shanghai 2023 in Shanghai, China.

This project was showcased at Design Shanghai 2023 for a four-day exhibition. As a magazine that integrates design and art, DA itself resembles an archive.

“Returning to the theme Archive, we aimed to extract inspiration and express the design concept from the magazine itself, creating a dynamic, sustainable and reusable exhibition form,” said Atmosphere Architects.

The space conveys the concept of the magazine as an archive and uses a dynamic and sustainable format to present the content, offering an immersive browsing experience for visitors to address the temporary nature of the exhibition, requiring the space to be easily disassembled, transported and reused multiple times.

The spatial layout is needed to ensure that visitors can experience diverse interactions in different areas. Additionally, materials had to be environmentally friendly and suitable for the exhibition venue’s requirements.

The project used sustainable natural materials, with wood serving as the core material for the main structure. The exterior was wrapped in washi paper, which is soft and lightweight.

Inside, the same material was used to create soft partitions that separate dynamic and static areas. To combine environmental consciousness with traditional building techniques, traditional woodworking methods were used in the construction, with modern design expressions ensuring the space’s lightness and transparency.

This project has been shortlisted in the exhibition design interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2024.
