The Old Chapel
by Tuckey Design Studio

Tuckey Design Studio has restored The Old Chapel in Kingsbridge, England.

The early 20th-century Old Chapel has been reinterpreted into a family home in rural Devon that maximises its compelling ecclesiastical interior.

The nave is now a spacious open-plan living area revolving around a central wood-burning stove, while slender arched windows frame the coastal topography beyond.

Reclaimed timber boards line the stripped-back ceiling, intermittently broken by restored rhythmic joists accentuating the drama of the pitched eaves.

A new plywood addition houses a study space above the kitchen, while downstairs, a terracotta stairwell leads to the bedrooms and extension, which open to a garden and a new courtyard.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
